Antiques show in £1million Angel discovery
Antiques Roadshow experts have broken the £1 million barrier for valuations.
The modern antique, a scale model of Anthony Gormley’s artwork for The Angel of the North. has been valued at over a million pounds by expert art dealer Philip Mould. He examined the piece before filming then made the final dramatic valuation, leaving the owner speechless with shock.
The astonishing figure was valued at £200,000 more than the cost of the real 66ft-high Angel, which cost £800,000 in 1998.
The model version, is 6ft high and 17ft wide. It was brought to the Gateshead show by a local councillor, John McElroy, whose father worked in a mine on the site where the Angel now stands. Despite its massive valuation, the owner has said they are unlikely to ever sell the piece.
Previously the most expensive UK valuation was £300,000 at Arundel Castle, West Sussex, in 2007. On the American version, the highest American valuation was given to a Navajo blanket, worth between £235,000 and £336,000.
