Safety fears may halt green stadium
Plans to install a 360 foot wind turbine at Eastlands stadium Manchester, home to Manchester City and the site of the 2008 UEFA Cup final, may be halted due to safety fears.
Experts warn that there is a risk of ice forming on the turbine blades and falling onto spectators and vehicles below.
European legislation state that turbines must be surrounded by an exclusion zone to avoid injury and damage. The turbine was planned to be outside the stadiums administration entrance and has been dubbed ‘ecotricity’.
Planning permission was granted in September 2006 and installation was due in October 2007.
If the turbine is built and operational it will power the stadium facilities and also produce a 22 percent surplus which would be sold off.
